Grafikkarten der kanadischen Fa. [http://www.matrox.com/de/ Matrox] {de} lassen sich in mindestens zwei Serien unterteilen. Relevant sind die G-Serie und die P-Serie (Parhelia). Dementsprechend stehen auch zwei Treiber zur Verfügung: ''mga'' und ''mtx'' (siehe Tabelle). Diese Anleitung bezieht sich auf die Installation des Treibers ''mtx'' für Parhelia-basierende Grafikkarten. Für die G-Serie steht mit ''mga'' ein Open Source-Treiber zur Verfügung, der von Ubuntu mit installiert wird.
Die Anleitung bezieht sich des weiteren auf den inoffiziellen Treiber von [http://projects.tuxx-home.at] {en}, da das Matrox-Original in der Regel deutlich hinter den inoffiziellen Versionen hinterherhinkt. Der hier beschriebene Treiber unterstützt X.Org bis 7.3 (mit dem Xorg Server 1.4) und Kernelversionen bis mindestens 2.6.27. Er läuft also bis einschließlich Ubuntu 8.04 [:Hardy_Heron:], aber nicht unter Ubuntu 9.04 [:Jaunty_Jackalope:] (X.Org 7.5).
Unter [http://www.matrox.com/graphics/de/support/drivers/download/?id=323 matrox.com] {en} gibt es inzwischen einen neuen offiziellen Matrox-Treiber. Dieser funktioniert laut Matrox mit Ubuntu 8.04 und 8.10, er funktioniert auch unter 9.04. Die Installation läuft genau so wie bei den inoffiziellen Treibern ab.
Für den 64-Bit-Treiber sind die Befehle entsprechend anzupassen.

= Installation =
Folgende Pakete müssen installiert [2] werden:

Danach lädt man den neusten verfügbaren Treiber von [http://projects.tuxx-home.at/?id=matrox_drivers http://projects.tuxx-home.at/?id=matrox_drivers] {en} herunter.
Jetzt öffnet man ein Terminal [1] und startet das Installationsskript:

Dadurch werden die Treiber extrahiert und anschließend installiert. Den Befehl muss man bei Bedarf an die neueste oder entsprechende 64-Bit-Version anpassen.
== Probleme ==
Sollte dies auf Anhieb nicht funktionieren, kann es sein, dass man den Treiber mit dem GNU C-Kompiler in der Version 3.4 bauen muss.
Hierfür benötigt man das Paket [1]

Danach gibt man im Terminal [1] diese Befehle ein

um den gcc-3.4 für die Installation als Standard festzulegen.
Sollte der Vorgang immer noch mit einem Fehler abbrechen hilft wahrscheinlich Folgendes

Die richtige Kernel-Version und Architektur ist hier natürlich zu beachten.
= Einrichtung =
Um den Bildschirmtreiber umzustellen, muss man den XServer neu einrichten. Als Grafiktreiber wird '''mtx''' gewählt.
Nun sollte ein Backup der GL-Bibliotheken in '''/usr/X11R6/lib''' erstellt werden:

Jetzt nur den XServer mit [[Vorlage(Tasten, Strg+Alt+Backspace)]] oder das System neu starten.
= TV, Auflösungen, Triplehead =
Der Treiber unterstützt immer noch kein Overlay. Dadurch können die meisten TV-Programme nicht funktionieren. "Zapping" geht jedoch, da man die Video-Ausgabe auf "Capture-Modus" umstellen kann. Ebenso funktioniert "xdtv", das einfach unbehandelte Rohdaten ausgibt und deswegen eine recht schlechte Bildqualität liefert.

Der Desktop wird angezeigt, jedoch ist das Bild verzerrt. Dies betrifft die Matrox Parhelia. Nach dem Ändern der Option "splash" in "nosplash" in der Datei '''[:Archiv/menu.lst:/boot/grub/menu.lst]''' ist das Bild anschließend einwandfrei.
